Kyle is located in Hays County, Texas, United States. Kyle is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas, with a population that grew from 28,016 people in 2010 to 45.697 people in 2020.
Kyle is located in eastern Hays County, at 29°59’21”N29°59’21”N 97°52’33”W97°52’33”W (29.98908080, -97.875947). San Marcos borders it to the south and Mountain City to the northwest. Kyle is located 21 miles (34 km) southwest Austin and 58 miles (93 km northeast San Antonio via Interstate 35.
The United States Census Bureau estimates that the city covers 19.3 square miles (50.0km2). 0.2 sq mi (0.56 km2) of the total area is water. The Blanco River flows through the city’s western side, and the eastern and central parts drain east to Plum Creek. Both are tributaries to the San Marcos River.
On July 24, 1880, David E. Moore (for whom the town was called) gave 200 acres to Fergus Kyle for the International-Great Northern Railroad. Residents and businesses came from Mountain City, three and four miles to the west, and Blanco, four and a half miles to the west. Tom Martin started Kyle’s first business. By 1882, the community had a population of over 500. However, it declined in later years. Kyle was established in 1928 as a city of general law with a mayor, five council members, and a mayor. Mary Kyle Hartson (daughter of Fergus Kyle) was elected mayor in a write-in election in 1937. Kyle was the first Texas town to have an all-woman government in the 1940s.
From 1892 to 1901, Kyle was Katherine Anne Porter’sPorter’s childhood home. Some of her most well-known short stories, including “Noon Wine,” were set in or around Kyle. Her former residence is now open to the public on an appointment basis. Readings are held by visiting writers at the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center.
