Lakeway, Texas

Lakeway is located in Travis County, Texas. It is situated near Lake Travis. It is located in Greater Austin. The 2020 census showed that the population had increased to 19,189 from 11,391 in 2010.

Lakeway is 16 miles (26 km), west of Austin at 30°21’55”N 97°58’34”W (30.365307; -97.976154). Hurst Creek flows through Lakeway and empties into Lake Travis just north of Lakeway. Lakeway’s GIS analyst says that the city’s total area is 13.37 sq. miles (21.51km). Of this, 13.07 sq. miles (15.0 km2) island, and 0.3 sq. miles (0.7 km2) is water (4.45%).

History

Lakeway was established on the 2,700-acre Ranch of Jack Josey, a Houston oilman, and rancher. Three Houston business people were involved with the Gulfmont Hotel Company-G in early 1962. John H. Crooker Jr., Flint Sawtelle, and Lee Blocker were granted a 60-day option to buy the land and create a resort community. Named Lakeway, the name was inspired by Gulfmont’s Fairway Motor Hotel, McAllen, Texas. It was named for its view of the fairway at a golf course. The hotel was built in October 1962, and it opened its doors on July 12, 1963. Flint Sawtelle, president of Lakeway Land Company, was also formed to develop real estate. A substantial majority of property owners, both resident, and non-resident, voted to incorporate with consent from the city of Austin in July 1974. The 1,200-acre Lakeway village was created.

Lakeway City Park is located along with picturesque Lake Travis. It offers swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Mansfield Dam Park has beautiful views over Lake Travis. Visitors can enjoy picnics, swim in a cove, fish, and sail from the largest public boat launch on Lake Travis. A large scuba diving park features four dive platforms on different lake levels. A compass and underwater trail connect dive attractions like sunken boats, historical dam materials, and geological points. There are campsites, chess boards, multiuse trails, and barbecue grills on land.
