Crooker Jr., Flint Sawtelle, and Lee Blocker were granted a 60-day option to buy the land and create a resort community. Named Lakeway, the name was inspired by Gulfmont’s Fairway Motor Hotel, McAllen, Texas. It was named for its view of the fairway at a golf course. The hotel was built in October 1962, and it opened its doors on July 12, 1963. Flint Sawtelle, president of Lakeway Land Company, was also formed to develop real estate. A substantial majority of property owners, both resident, and non-resident, voted to incorporate with consent from the city of Austin in July 1974. The 1,200-acre Lakeway village was created.
